Wunin case

25/01/2004

Like many cases in the Central Highlands, a complete chronology of the events in Wunin in January 2004 has not been published. It appears that between seven and nine men were arrested in January, accused of being members of the Free Papua Organisation (OPM) and burning down schools and government offices. The incident briefly made national headlines when it was reported that a well-known OPM leader, Kelly Kwalik, was among the arrested, but that information turned out to be false. As local media had already published reports of Indonesian Special Forces burning down the village and its public buildings before any arrests took place, it is likely that this was not the only piece of misleading information surrounding this case.
