Election boycott Wamena arrests

On 9 July 2014, 18 people were arrested in Wamena for their involvement in distribution of flyers calling for an election boycott. While 13 of them were released shortly after, the remaining five were charged with Articles 187 and 164 for conspiracy to endanger security of persons or property for reportedly making and using explosives. Human rights lawyers reported that the detainees faced torture and cruel and degrading treatment during arrest and detention.
