Fak-Fak flag-raising

19/07/2008

After the Morning Star flag had been flying for two minutes outside the Pepera building in Fak-Fak, police moved in on the assembled gathering, arresting 35 people, and later rounding up another eleven. The arrested men were forced to strip to their underwear, were beaten with sticks and some were kicked. Nine were held awaiting trial; six charged with treason and the other three charged under Emergency Law 12/1951 for possession of sharp weapons. Those charged with treason were originally sentenced to two years, but the prosecution appealed the sentence and it was later increased to four years in prison.
