On 19 May 2013, Stefanus Banal was arrested during a police raid in Oksibil, Pegunungan Bintang regency, under accusations of involvement in an arson attack on a local police station. Banal, who reportedly had no involvement in the attack, was shot in the leg and sustained severe injuries on arrest. He was charged with Article 170 of the Indonesian Criminal Code for violence against persons or property.
