Eleven people were arrested in Sorong on 26th November 2019 for encouraging the local residents to participate in a protest to commemorate the proclamation of independence of West New Guinea Republic. These arrests were part of state security’s wider effort to crackdown on freedom of expression and assembly of the West Papuan people nearing the 1st of December Flag Raising ceremony in West Papua. They were all charged with treason.
