Yapen Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations

09/08/2012

A demonstration took place in Serui on 9 August 2012 to mark World Indigenous Peoples’ Day. After the military dispersed the demonstration by firing into the air, they arrested at least six people. Of these, two men were held to face charges of treason and incitement in court. They have reported that they are still experiencing health problems as a result of the beatings they received when initially arrested.
