Naftali Tipagau was arrested on 4th of January 2021 and detained at Polda Jayapura detention centre. He was suspected of supplying weapons and ammunition to armed pro-independence group. During his arrest, he was beaten by police officer in front of his family members. He was charged with Article 1(1) of Emergency Law No. 12/1951 Joint Article 55 of the Criminal Code
