Yance Hegemur is a farmer. Mr Hegemur was arrested by Fakfak police on 1st of December 2019 for participating in the Flag Raising ceremony. He was arrested with Abdon Tigtigweria, Alfaris Herietrenggi, Bernadus Herietrenggi, Efernandus Wahab, Elieser Herietrenggi, Eli Tigtigweria, Enggel Tigtigweria, Erick Tigtigweria, Etus Bahba, Hendrik Herietrenggi, Hermus Martinus Lumatalale, Heret Patiran, Herman Bahba, Kaleb Hegemur, Korneles Tigtigweria, Leonard Tigtigweria, Nelson Hegemur, Petrus Temongmere, Rizak Heremba, Soleman Herietrenggi, Zet Alfin Patiran and Yesnel Bahba. They were all arrested without a warrant, charged with treason and detained in Fakfak prison. Their trial started in October 2020 with the verdicts were read out on 26th October 2020. Yance was sentenced to 1 year in prison.

At the time of his arrest, Mr Hegemur and 22 other individuals were walking from their villages to Fakfak City to participate in the commemoration of West Papua’s national day. While taking a break en route, the group was surrounded by security forces, who proceeded to chase, shoot at, and arrest them. Security forces accused Mr Hegemur, along with each of the other individuals, of planning to attend a West Papuan Morning Star flag-raising ceremony.
